Pollination

Flowers depend on bees for pollination..

…it’s as simple (and complex) as that! Which is why we respect the process of pollination and the vital role it plays in helping orchard owners succeed. Top quality pollination enables healthy, high-yielding crops.

Pollination is the transfer of pollen between the male part of a flower to the female part of a flower to achieve fertilisation. The fertilised flower forms a fruit.

Covering the north

Up to 15 avocado orchards depend on our support of this clever interaction between bee and flower. But this unique process is beneficial for all. In return for delivering pollen, our bees are treated to nectar, pollen or resin.

Marshwood’s beehives are dotted around avocado, kiwifruit and stonefruit orchards in North Auckland right up to Kaitaia in the Far North. Each hive must be suitable for its local environment, and every orchard is unique. We carry out intensive methods to keep our hives healthy and free of varroa mite. It is not unusual for us to check a hive over 10 times a year.

There is a strong duty of care in this role, and Marshwood have stringent systems in place to look after both the bees and the land where they forage.
